January End of the Month for a Cause: Thyroid Awareness Month

January is Thyroid Awareness Month!  More than half of US residents with a Thyroid problem are currently undiagnosed,*  therefore it’s important to spread the word.

On the last refinance day of the month, January 25th wear teal and send us your photo!

Each month, Res/Title chooses a cause to support as part of our “End of the Month for a Cause.”  For each photo submitted, we will donate to the Light of Life Foundation.

What is the thyroid?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland that is located in the lower front of the neck. Its job is to make thyroid hormones, which are secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body. Thyroid hormone helps the body use energy, stay warm and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working as they should.

What happens when something is wrong with a person’s thyroid?

1 in 8 women will develop a thyroid problem in her lifetime.* Symptoms include unexplainable weight gain, aches, sensitivity to cold, thinking hair, brain fog, fatigue, mood issues, muscle weakness; and other autoimmune symptoms.  Common thyroid diseases include Hyperthyroid, Hypothyroid, Hashimoto’s and Thyroid Cancer.

About Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer in women is rising faster than any other cancer in the United States.  There are about 64,300 new cases of Thyroid Cancer.**

About the Light of Life Foundation

LOLF spreads awareness of Thyroid Cancer, offers support to patients and further medical advancements towards a cure and the improvement of patient’s quality of life.

In 1997 a patient recovering from thyroid surgery started the LOLF to create a support and education network that was not available at the time of her diagnosis.  With the doctors who saved her life, they began distributing gift baskets to patients in isolation, organized support groups, held informational seminars, and sold merchandise to fuel awareness and raise funds for thyroid cancer research.
